Birdies his Last Four Holes to Overtake MacIntyre

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 11, 2024) — Chris Gotterup birdied four of the first six holes on his inward nine and closed with another birdie for a 6-under-par 65 Saturday and 54-hole total of -18 to increase his lead to four strokes heading into the final round of the Myrtle Beach Classic at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The 24-year-old who had only 23 putts in his third round, is seeking his first TOUR win, one that would earn him $720,000 and a spot in next week’s PGA Championship.

“I practiced all those days at home for a day like tomorrow. It’s going to be hard.,” said Gotterup, whose 65 tied for low round on the day. “There’s a lot of good guys behind me. I’m going to have to bring it. But if I was here at the beginning of the week and you said this was going to happen, I’d be all in. I’m excited. It’s what I play the game for.”

Brown continues to impress with his 5-under-par 66 on Saturday.

Gotterup’s closest challengers are Erik van Rooyen, Jorge Campillo and Robert MacIntyre, who was only one stroke off the lead heading into the third round. Davis Thompson is another stroke behind at -13. Alex Smalley will start Sunday at -12, while eight more stand at -11. Sixteen-year-old amateur Blades Brown impressed with a 5-under-par 66 to be tied for 22nd.

It’s been so much fun… I think this is just perfect for my future just because you can’t practice for this,” said Brown. “You can only get this experience playing in a tournament like this. But yeah, everyone is awesome. Everyone’s support is phenomenal. I’m so stoked to be here.”

Play concludes Sunday (May 12) at the 7,347-yard venue that was host to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on PGA TOUR Champions from 1994 to 1999, with notables Raymond Floyd, Jim Colbert, Jay Sigel, Gil Morgan, Hale Irwin and Gary McCord claiming titles. Twenty-one years earlier, this Robert Trent Jones-designed course was the site of PGA TOUR Q-School Finals in 1973, with Ben Crenshaw taking medalist honors.

The Myrtle Beach Classic is a dual-field PGA TOUR event sponsored by Visit Myrtle Beach and managed by SPORTFIVE, a global event management company. The local event will be one of two stops in the Palmetto State for the PGA TOUR in 2024, joining with the RBC Heritage in April at Harbour Town Golf Links.
