Twenty-four-year-old Claims First Win on the PGA TOUR

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 12, 2024) — After a shaky start to his final round, Chris Gotterup regrouped and went birdie-eagle-birdie in a three-hole stretch before cruising to a six-stroke win, his first on the PGA TOUR, at the Myrtle Beach Classic at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Gotterup took the lead after 36 holes and never looked back. He finished with a 4-under 67 Sunday, for a 72-hole total of 22 under par 262. He closest challengers were Davis Thompson and Alistair Docherty, who finished at -16, with a 268 total.
The winner’s share of $720,000 nearly matched Gotterup’s career earnings in 27 previous TOUR events since turning professional in 2022. The win also earned the long-hitting Gotterup who 300 Fed Ex points and a spot in next week’s PGA Championship. His best finish previously was a tie for fourth at the 2022 John Deere Classic.
“I still feel like a rookie, but I feel like I belong at a high level. Not that I didn’t before, but now I have some more accolades to prove it,” admitted Gotterup after the round. “Obviously this is a big notch in the belt, but I feel like I have a lot of room to improve, as well, which is the fun part about it. I played great this week and grinded it out, but me and A.J. (his caddie) out there, we were talking about things that we can get better at while we’re playing, which is the fun part.”
The low round of the tournament came early on Sunday when 24-year-old Thorbjorn Olesen made 10 birdies for a course record 10-under 61, moving into a tie for 16th place. Sixteen-year-old amateur Blades Brown finished with a 69, his third sub-par round, for a -10 total and a tie for 26th.
Play was conducted on the 7,347-yard venue that was host to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on PGA TOUR Champions from 1994 to 1999, with notables Raymond Floyd, Jim Colbert, Jay Sigel, Gil Morgan, Hale Irwin and Gary McCord claiming titles. Twenty-one years earlier, this Robert Trent Jones-designed course was the site of PGA TOUR Q-School Finals in 1973, with Ben Crenshaw taking medalist honors.
The Myrtle Beach Classic was a dual-field PGA TOUR event sponsored by Visit Myrtle Beach and managed by SPORTFIVE, a global event management company. The local event was one of two stops in the Palmetto State for the PGA TOUR in 2024, joining with the RBC Heritage in April at Harbour Town Golf Links.
