Golden Knights performance set for 5 p.m. on Thursday (May 9)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Apr. 9, 2024) — The U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team is scheduled to make a spectacular visit to the Myrtle Beach Classic at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 9, when the elite aerial team will perform daring maneuvers before landing on the beach area.
The Myrtle Beach Classic is the area’s first PGA TOUR event, set for May 6-12 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The demonstration is free to Thursday ticket-holders. Tickets for the tournament are available at myrtlebeachclassic.com.
The Black Team, one of two Army units named for the Academy’s black and gold colors, has its home base at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. Along with the Gold Team, the Golden Knights have performed more than 21,000 times throughout the U.S. and 48 foreign countries. Formed in 1959, the Golden Knights are composed of more than 100 men and women with the goal of promoting opportunities for service in the Army.
It is expected that about 10-12 parachutists will take part, performing various maneuvers that may include mass freefall formations, baton passing and an array of synchronized canopy formations. Other elite aerial teams within the U.S. Department of Defense are the Air Force Thunderbirds, the Navy Blue Angels and the Navy Parachute Team.
“I have performed more than 3,000 jumps, but it never gets old. The adrenaline kicks in as the team is about to exit the aircraft,” said Sergeant 1st Class Ryan O’Rourke, 38, who has been a member of the Golden Knights for more than five years. “Everything has an inherent risk, but we are dedicated to showing our country what we can do, and we are excited about meeting the people of Myrtle Beach.”
“Our goal for the Myrtle Beach Classic is to offer a chance to see great golf and top-notch entertainment,” said Darren Nelson, tournament director. “I think our Thursday crowd will have memories for a lifetime.”
The Myrtle Beach Classic is a dual-field PGA TOUR event sponsored by Visit Myrtle Beach and managed by SPORTFIVE, a global event management company. The local event will be one of two stops in the Palmetto State for the PGA TOUR in 2024, joining with the RBC Heritage in April at Harbour Town Golf Links.
A Robert Trent Jones-designed course, the Dunes Club was incorporated in 1948. It was host to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on PGA TOUR Champions from 1994 to 1999, with notables Raymond Floyd, Jim Colbert, Jay Sigel, Gil Morgan, Hale Irwin and Gary McCord claiming titles. Twenty-one years earlier, the Dunes Club was the site of PGA TOUR Q-School Finals in 1973, with Ben Crenshaw taking medalist honors.
