Birdies his Last Four Holes to Overtake MacIntyre

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 10, 2024) — Chris Gotterup closed with four birdies and signed for an 8-under-par 63 Friday to overtake early finisher Robert MacIntyre by one stroke after two rounds at the Myrtle Beach Classic at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.

Gotterup, 24, who has played in 26 PGA TOUR events since turning pro in 2022, raced home with a 30 (6 under) on his second nine, including birdies from 40 feet and 18 feet on his final two holes, to continue a hot stretch of golf that led him to top-25 finishes the last two weeks.

“(My play at) Zurich was really helpful for me. I’ve been struggling a little bit, as you do in golf,” said Gotterup. “But it was a fun week, and I just started playing a little bit better. I felt good last week too. I’m not surprised, but obviously there’s a lot of golf left.”

MacIntyre had overtaken first-round leader Beau Hossler with his 4-under 67 to stand at 11-under 133 until Gotterup closed fast. Jorge Campillo is another stroke behind at 10 under. Hossler, who shot a first-round 64, is among four players at -10, and seven more are at -8 heading into the weekend. The 36-hole cut came at -2, with 70 players advancing. One of them was 16-year-old Blades Brown, an amateur who is playing in his first PGA TOUR event.

“I’m trying to keep my card out here. It’s not easy. I’ve not had the greatest of starts,” said MacIntyre, who was part of the victorious European Ryder Cup team in 2023, but also still looking for his first win on the PGA TOUR. “I’ve not played the way I want to play. I want to be one of the best players in the world, so wherever I’ve got to play.”

Play continues through Sunday (May 12) at the 7,347-yard venue that was host to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on PGA TOUR Champions from 1994 to 1999, with notables Raymond Floyd, Jim Colbert, Jay Sigel, Gil Morgan, Hale Irwin and Gary McCord claiming titles. Twenty-one years earlier, this Robert Trent Jones-designed course was the site of PGA TOUR Q-School Finals in 1973, with Ben Crenshaw taking medalist honors.

The Myrtle Beach Classic is a dual-field PGA TOUR event sponsored by Visit Myrtle Beach and managed by SPORTFIVE, a global event management company. The local event will be one of two stops in the Palmetto State for the PGA TOUR in 2024, joining with the RBC Heritage in April at Harbour Town Golf Links.
